Biomedical Engineering


The department of Biomedical Engineering is facilitated with the Laboratories like Diagnostic and Therapeutic Equipment Laboratory, Medical Electronics Laboratory, Biochemistry and Microbiology Laboratory, Physiological Data Acquisition Laboratory, Biosignal and Image Processing Laboratory.

Diagnosis is used in many other trades and professions to determine the causes of symptoms, mitigations for problems, or solutions to issues. A diagnostic test is any kind of medical test performed to aid in the diagnosis or detection of disease. For example:

  • To diagnose diseases
  • To measure the progress or recovery from disease
  • To confirm that a person is free from disease

In GCE, Diagnostics and therapeutic lab was established in 2018. In this lab, students are able to understand the various life saving equipments like defibrillator, pacemaker, and diathermy units. In this lab, the Major equipments available are

 BMI Lab was established in 2018. The Lab has well equipped Instruments and sophisticated software’s to acquire signals likes ECG, EEG, PCG, EOG, and EMG.  The various physiographic units are also available for continuous monitoring of biological signals. The equipments available are:

  • Audiometer
  • Telemetry Units
  • Data Acquisition Unit
  • Multipara Monitoring Unit
  • Pulse Peripheral Unit.

This Laboratory is an introductory experimental laboratory that explores the design, construction, and debugging of analog and digital electronic circuits. It helps to perform microprocessor and microcontroller based programs. The performance characteristics of diodes, transistors, JFETs, and op-amps, single stage amplifier, including the construction of a combinational, sequential circuits & counters are performed using this Laboratory. The laboratory is equipped with apparatus which helps the students to perform the basic experiments in Analog electronics, Digital electronics & Microprocessor and Microcontroller. The lab also helps the students in pursuing projects in electronics. This lab has DSOs, CROs, Function Generators, Power supplies, Multimeters, LCR meters, Digital IC Trainer, Microprocessor and Microcontroller and other devices.

The Department of Bio-Medical Engineering has a well equipped Biochemistry and Human Physiology Laboratory. The laboratory provides theoretical and practical training for observation of living systems, particularly microorganisms and bio-molecules which are of clinical importance. The major equipment is:

This Lab was established in the year 2012 with the primary intention to improve the research abilities of both the student and the faculty. This lab has got abilities to acquire the physiological data from human subjects and is equipped with systems and software such as MATLAB and LABVIEW to process them. This lab is equipped with 30 systems of latest configuration and is powered with internet facility for the students and faculty to carry out their research works. For acquiring physiological data we have got a Penta vu Multipara monitoring system from which data can be got from human subjects and stored in computers so that they can be processed later. This lab can be used for working in three Major areas namely, Biosignal Data acquisition using LABVIEW, Bio signal and Image Processing using MATLAB and Embedded programming using FPGA tools from ALTERA. We can expect more number of student projects and Faculty publications from this lab in the years to come.

Biomedical signal and image processing lab was established with 66 latest desktops of HP and Dell. The laboratory has backup capability of about 15KVA. It enables the learners to do program for digital signal processing and image processing using MATLAB and digital signal processors. The lab also provides internet facility for all the systems. Final year and pre-final year students mostly uses this facilities to do their mini-project and their curriculum project.

Gnanamani College of Engineering, involves itself in catering its services to the needy for past 10 years. It is consistently showing its untiring and unremarkable philanthropic activities for the betterment of the students in particular and the society in general. In its efforts towards the up-liftment of the society, it has crossed many milestones at par with international educational institutions. In this regard, many research and development activities are being carried out at a full swing. One such R & D activities among other R&D efforts is the inauguration of the Mission10x Unified Technology Learning Centre in collaboration with Wipro Technologies, Bangalore.

UTLP (Unified Technology Learning Platform) is an ardent facilitator for aiding engineers gain hand-on, learn and understand complex and advance technologies simply. Besides, UTLP also concentrates on making students and freshmen industry ready as it gives them the experience of working in real time. Eventually, UTLP embraces modern technologies to bridge the gap between academia and industry. It increases individual learning towards subjects and supports and motivates students towards building and integrating concepts keeping in mind organizational practices. It also promotes and expedites Entrepreneurship and Research within the country.

The knowledge on the usage of UTLP Board is the need of hour in order to bridge the gap between the expectations of the industry and the educational institutions. It's the first time in our region such a lab has been set up exclusively for application oriented training and implementation. UTLP board comprises ARM cortex processor, DSP processor, TFT LCD, Character LCD and so on embedded on a single kit. Through this centre, training an be given to the staff and students at college premises regarding real time applications. The students are the real beneficiaries of these efforts; learn and have hands-on about the applications of FPGA, DIP and Embedded System at a time.

Apart from the grand central library of our college, The department of Biomedical engineering has a Department Library that has all the Important books related to the syllabus of the program and general books as well. The Department library is stocked with 300 books. The greatest advantage of the department library is that the number of books one can get from the department library is not limited. Seating is also arranged in the department library so that both the faculty and students can have a quick reference regarding any topic.
